Helpful Hints For Buying Art:

The first consideration in buying art is your own opinion of it... You are the one buying it, you are the one who will live with it - you should like it. The reason you like it however, should be your own. Art does not have to be "pretty" or "nice". Art should give you a feeling, a sort of "truth" about something captured in time. Similar to a poet who doesn't merely say "it's gloomy outside" in a poem, but makes you feel the gloom through carefully choosen words, the art you buy should also make you feel something and reflect something about yourself. Unlike buying a commodity that everyone has, art buying is a personal decision, that enriches your life with every unique piece.

When buying art for your home, there are several things to consider. The most obvious, but sometimes overlooked, is the size of the painting or sculpture. Take time to measure the space and think about how close the viewer will be to the piece when looking at it. Also, think of the impact the art will have on the room. Do you want it to stand out as a statement, or do you want it to compliment the architecture of the room or the feeling of your home? The frame, if it's a painting, and the subject matter also play an important role in how the art will "show".

Lastly, art can be an investment. Depending on the skill of the artist, a piece can rise in monetary value and actually be worth more in the future. However, all art can be passed along as family heirlooms, strengthening your family bond for generations to come.

Choosing a Frame:

Measure the artwork, including its depth. Decide if you want to protect the piece with glass or leave it exposed for people to examine the brush strokes and textures. Decide if you want a deep or shallow frame - be sure to consider if there is space for a deep frame. (I.E. You wouldn't want a thick frame too low, by a couch, as people's heads may bump it when they sit down). Decide which style frame compliments the painting the best - ornate, sleek and simple - rustic? Then choose a color that goes with the general look of the painting itself. Remember to consider the weight of the painting and the weight of the frame, to choose the right fasteners. Also, be sure the wall you have choosen can support the weight, you may have to strategically place the painting over studs in the wall. Don't be scared to experiment, sometimes the style you least expected works like a charm. A good frame shop will help you go over all your options for best results.
